Television and ADHD

Is your ADHD child constantly watching television in his free time? If so, then it’s about time that you put a restriction on how much television he is watching.  A recent study has been published that found that television watching is a factor that may cause ADHD. According to the study, an addicted TV child or those children who watched TV for more than two hours per day were prone to having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Why is television thought to be a cause of ADHD? A new study has found that kids who watched television for more than two hours per day were more prone to having ADHD. This is because when an ADHD child watches television, he thinks that some fictional shows are normal events and that they can happen in the real world, even though they cannot. He also thinks that things will happen as fast as how they happened on TV so when he does that thing in reality and discovers that it is really not that fast, then he’ll get bored with it and lose focus. It has also been thought that the noise on television disturbs the progress of the child’s verbal ability. It is believed that the more time the child spends in front of the television, the less time they are out learning and discovering for themselves. It is still not a good idea if television is watched all the time, even when watching an educational series made for kids, because the child is not experiencing those things on their own in the real world.

Knowing the television ADD connection, what can you do to keep your ADHD child from watching television? There are a number of things to keep your child from watching too much television. The following are three tips to help curb viewing:

1.      Do not put a television set in your child’s bedroom: A lot of children have a television set in their bedroom. That makes them tempted to watch something even if they have to do homework, study or go to sleep.

2.      Do things shown on television: Instead of letting your child watch televisions shows that teach children how kids play, talk, pray, and read with their parents, it is better to actually do these things with your child.

3.      Keep active outside: Encourage your child to go outdoors and play sports or let him join a community service to keep him away from the TV.
